Worked example and interpretation

A principal of 1,200 at 0% over 12 months gives a payment of 100 per month, before fees or extra repayments. Reset restores this example in both scenarios. Other calculation modes use the retained example assumptions.

These deterministic illustrations do not establish credit eligibility, investment performance, statutory compliance or final lender terms. Inspect the formulas and timing conventions before using a result in a decision.

How do payment size, interest and repayment length change between financing options?

  1. Enter the principal, annual rate and term for the baseline. Choose a reducing-balance or flat-rate loan, or a simple or compound interest illustration.
  2. Copy the baseline to the proposed scenario, then change its terms. Reducing-balance loans also support a one-time extra repayment.
  3. Compare the results and inspect the repayment schedule and formulas. Export the complete results or save the assumptions as scenario JSON.

A worked example

At 0% annual interest, a principal of 1,200 over 12 months gives 12 monthly payments of 100, zero interest and a total repayment of 1,200 before fees.

Common questions

What is the difference between flat and reducing interest?

Flat interest is calculated on the original principal throughout the term. Reducing-balance interest is calculated on the outstanding balance each month. The same stated percentage therefore does not imply the same cost. This calculator shows each convention separately.

How does loan prepayment work here?

For reducing-balance loans, the extra principal payment follows the regular payment in the selected month. You can keep the regular payment and shorten the term, or keep the term and reduce subsequent payments. Flat-rate prepayment is refused because settlement rebates depend on lender-specific terms.

Are fees, APR and lender rounding included?

An entered upfront fee is paid separately and included in total cost; it is not financed. The tool does not calculate a regulated APR or model lender-specific daily interest, penalties or instalment rounding. The detailed schedule retains full calculation precision.

Connect financing cost to the project decision

Use the project business-case workbench to evaluate entered costs and benefits over a consistent horizon. Financing terms alone do not show whether a project creates value.
