Project ROI, NPV, IRR & XIRR Calculator

Evaluate project ROI, NPV, IRR and dated XIRR. Compare entered cash flows and explore growth, inflation and WACC with formulas and local exports.

  1. 1Set your baseline
  2. 2Change one assumption
  3. 3Compare and save

Scenario assumptions

Test a project business case with your own cash flows and assumptions. Choose the calculation that matches the question you are asking.

Values are not converted between currencies.

Baseline

Your current scenario

Selected: Net present value (NPV)

First value is at time zero. Negative values are outflows; subsequent periods are equally spaced.

Match the cash-flow interval; annual flows need an annual rate.

Proposed

Your alternative scenario

Selected: Net present value (NPV)

First value is at time zero. Negative values are outflows; subsequent periods are equally spaced.

Match the cash-flow interval; annual flows need an annual rate.

Enter assumptions, then compare both scenarios.

Your scenario results

Calculate both scenarios to see the comparison and a visual explanation.

See the effect of your assumptions

Enter both scenarios and select Compare scenarios. Validated results and visuals appear together.

An initial outflow of 1,000 followed by 600 at each year-end for two years, discounted at 10%, has an NPV of approximately 41.32.

Save and resume locally

Scenario JSON saves names, inputs, currency and conventions for this tool. Import it to resume. Results JSON records the calculation and is not an import format. No automatic saving occurs.

Worked example and interpretation

An initial outflow of 1,000 followed by 600 at each year-end for two years, discounted at 10%, has an NPV of approximately 41.32. Reset restores this example in both scenarios. Other calculation modes use the retained example assumptions.

These deterministic illustrations do not establish credit eligibility, investment performance, statutory compliance or final lender terms. Inspect the formulas and timing conventions before using a result in a decision.

Calculations and scenario files stay in your browser. Financial inputs are not added to navigation links, automatically stored or transmitted by this tool. Downloaded files contain your entered information.

Does the project still make financial sense when timing and assumptions change?

  1. Choose the financial question: return on total costs, discounted value, a cash-flow return, or a growth and discount-rate helper.
  2. Enter one currency and consistent time periods. Build baseline and proposed scenarios using the same calculation method.
  3. Compare results, read the timing conventions and export the assumptions with the calculation record. Use the result to identify which assumptions need stronger evidence.

A worked example

An outflow of 1,000 at time zero followed by 600 at the end of each of two periods has an NPV of approximately 41.32 at a 10% discount rate per period. In the ROI example, benefits of 1,500 against investment of 1,000 and operating costs of 200 give a 25% return on total costs.

Common questions

When should I use ROI instead of NPV?

ROI here divides net benefit by initial investment plus operating costs over one consistent horizon. It does not discount timing. NPV discounts equally spaced cash flows at your entered rate; the first cash-flow row is at time zero.

What is the difference between IRR and XIRR?

IRR assumes equally spaced cash flows and returns a rate per entered period. XIRR uses calendar dates and returns an annual rate based on actual elapsed days divided by 365. XIRR sorts dates and combines same-day amounts before calculation.

Why might the tool refuse an IRR result?

The supported profile requires chronological net cash flows with exactly one change of sign. Multiple-sign-change or absent-sign-change inputs are refused rather than choosing a potentially misleading root. A result is also refused if the bounded solver cannot establish a converged root.

Does WACC supply market rates or tax rules?

No. Equity weight, equity cost, debt cost and the tax adjustment are entered assumptions. The helper applies the declared formula without a market feed or a determination that interest is tax-deductible.

Check the delivery assumptions behind a migration case

For an integration migration, inspect the estate size, indicative build effort and capability gaps alongside the financial model. Keep implementation effort and financial assumptions explicit.
